Who is liable for side walk slip and fall injuries?

Back to New York Personal Injury Questions

Video Transcription

If you trip and fall on the sidewalk, you have certain rights. First of all, in New York City, the landowner is responsible for that sidewalk. It used to be that the city of New York was, but that burden shifted some time ago, and now it is up to the landlord to make sure he properly maintains that sidewalk.

There are rules and regulations for the city of New York that say that any defect on the sidewalk that’s more than half an inch is hazardous and should be repaired. So if you trip and fall on the sidewalk, please be sure to call a lawyer and report the accident immediately to the building owners or management.
