Stay on Top of Drug and Product Safety

The ability of the Internet to quickly deliver information can be a lifesaver when it comes to keeping yourself and your household safe from dangerous and defective drugs, medical devices, and consumer products. Here are some of the websites that can help you stay on top of drug and product safety and hopefully prevent a tragic injury or death to yourself or a loved one.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves and regulates the U.S. sale of drugs, medical devices, food, cosmetics, dietary supplements, and products that emit radiation. The FDA’s page on Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts keeps you up to date on concerns the FDA has with products under its jurisdiction. Look for the link on the webpage where you can sign up to receive safety notifications via email.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) aims to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death from thousands of types of consumer products, from toys and cribs to household chemicals and power tools. Some of the latest recalls issued by the CSPC include: certain portable electric heaters posing a burn hazard; certain floor lamps posing a hazard of electric shock; certain child bicycle trailers and bicycle helmets which could result in head injury or other personal injury; and certain LED flashlights posing a burn or fire hazard. The CPSC allows you to subscribe to its recall notification list so that you can be made aware of recalls and safety information as soon as it is made available to the public.

For one-stop shopping, www.Recalls.gov is a combined effort of the FDA, the CPSC, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. At this one site, you can find the latest recall information on consumer products, motor vehicles, boats, food, medicine, cosmetics, and environmental products. Not only can you sign up for email notifications from the various agencies; this site also has an app so you can receive product recalls directly to your mobile device.

While the government does what it can to keep us safe, sometimes dangerous products get through their screens and injure many people before the product gets taken off the market. Action by injured consumers is often the first way that the government and the public become aware of these dangers. If you or a family member have been harmed by a dangerous drug or defective product, contact the law office of Leandros A. Vrionedes, P.C. in New York City for a free consultation.
