Broken Pills and NanoKnives – Just the Latest on the Recall Front

Drug manufacturer Novartis has issued a voluntary recall of several bottles of many of its over-the-counter medications, including Bufferin, Excedrin, Gas-X and NoDoz. Not only may some of the pills be chipped or broken, but the medicines may be mixed with other medicines that do not belong in the bottle. If you have any of these medications in your home, visit the company’s website at www.novartis-otc.com to find out if your particular bottles are affected. You may be able to return the product for a refund.

Defective/Recalled Medical Device

Meanwhile, AngioDynamics, a maker of medical devices, is issuing a recall of its NanoKnife, a device which uses pulses of electricity to kill cancerous tumors. Apparently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has concerns with a recent software update on the device which was not properly approved. This is the fourth recall recently for this medical device manufacturer. Product information on the NanoKnife can be found on the company’s website, although no mention is made there of the recall at the time of this writing.

Steps You Can Take to Protect Yourself from Defective Products

It is great when a company catches its own mistake, or when the FDA intervenes before any damage is caused. But this is not always the case, and the fact of these recent recalls goes to show the wide range of dangers health care consumers may face from defective drugs or medical devices. What can you do as a consumer? You can keep informed of recalls, market withdrawals, and safety alerts at the FDA website to stay on top of problems that have already been identified, but unfortunately there is little you can do about possible hidden dangers on the market that have yet to be discovered.
