DMV Provides Valuable Information on New York Car Crashes

speed_dmv

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles maintains valuable information regarding automobile crashes throughout the state. The DMV recently released a summary of statistical information for 2011 crash data, which provides a glimpse of the automobile accidents occurring over the past year.

Statewide there were 307,550 motor vehicle crashes, which resulted in 1,077 fatalities and 128,036 personal injuries. In addition, there were 15,928 collisions involving pedestrians and another 6,076 involving a crash between a car and a bicycle. Motorcycle crashes accounted for 5,336 accidents. Taken altogether, the fatality number rises to 1,153 persons killed. Of those killed, 597 were drivers and 203 were passengers, while 296 pedestrians and 57 cyclists lost their lives.

Negligent, Reckless Driving was a Leading Cause

The major factors attributed to the cause of these crashes are driver inattention or distracted driving, along with following too closely and failure to yield the right of way. Speeding was also a major factor, although not as much as the other three mentioned above. Alcohol appeared to play a factor in only about 3.1% of the total number of accidents.

Most of the crashes involved two vehicles, although most of the fatalities occurred in single-car accidents. Most accidents occurred from 3:00-6:00pm regardless of the day of the week, although most crashes occurred on Friday and the least number on Sunday.

The report includes statistical information on property damage as well. When property damage and personal injury costs are taken together, the costs of these accidents are astronomical. In many instances of property damage, personal injury or wrongful death, the assistance of a skilled and experienced lawyer is needed to ensure that fair compensation is provided to the victims by the negligent drivers and their insurance companies.
