Benicar is the brand name for olmesartan medoxomil, a medication used to treat hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Benicar works by blocking the activity of a hormone – Angiotensin II – causing the blood vessels to dilate which lowers blood pressure. Users of Benicar, however, have reported serious complications after using the drug.
Chronic Diarrhea, Malnourishment
Benicar usage is being linked with a rare condition called Sprue-like Enteropathy. Sprue is also known as Celiac disease, and people with Sprue-like Enteropathy experience the same medical dangers as Celiac sufferers. In either case, the villi lining the intestines lose their ability to absorb nutrients, causing a person to waste away from malnourishment or even starve to death, regardless of what they eat or how much they eat. However, whereas Celiac’s can be controlled by switching to a gluten-free diet, the presence or absence of gluten has no effect on a Sprue-like Enteropathy. People who experience this condition due to Benicar need to stop taking Benicar in order for their condition to improve.
The Sprue-like Enteropathy caused by Benicar use is serious and painful. Victims may experience chronic diarrhea and severe intestinal discomfort. Since the condition mimics Celiac disease and is so rare, it may be misdiagnosed as Celiac’s, which means the victim will be placed on a gluten-free diet yet continue to suffer until the true cause of the condition is discovered.
Benicar Drug Maker May be Liable for Causing Personal Injury
Benicar is manufactured by drug maker Daiichi Sankyo. This pharmaceutical giant may be liable if it is shown that they released a product on the market which was dangerously defective. Drug manufacturers can be liable for injuries caused by their products in a number of ways, including:
- Medication was unreasonably unsafe
- Drug was not properly tested for safety
- Drug safety information was concealed from the FDA, doctors or the public
- Manufacturer failed to warn about side effects, complications and other drug dangers
The FDA has already required Daiichi Sankyo to place a boxed warning on Benicar packaging regarding fetal toxicity and dangers of Benicar use by pregnant women. At this time, no warnings have been required about the Sprue-like Enteropathy, and no recalls have been issued.
